ChildFund Kiribati Works Again with UNICEF to Support Drought Preparedness

ChildFund Kiribati is pleased to be working again with UNICEF to support the implementation of the Drought Preparedness Program across Kiribati’s outer islands.

The program is being implemented in two phases. The first phase targets six outer islands: Tamana, Onotoa, North Tabiteuea, Nikunau, Arorae, and Beru. The second phase targets two outer Islands South Tabiteuea and Nonouti Island.

As part of Phase 1, the ChildFund Kiribati and Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy (MISE) team has already visited Tamana, Onotoa, and North Tabiteuea. During these visits, the team worked closely with island councils, Outer Island Assistant Infrastructure Technichian, community leaders, schools, Churches, and community members to better understand local water needs and drought preparedness.

The team conducted household surveys, assessed existing water systems, tested water quality and salinity. MISE also supported water quality testing and technical assessments to better understand the condition and safety of existing water sources and systems.

These activities are helping to identify challenges and community needs related to water access, water quality, water storage, and drought preparedness. The information gathered will contribute to planning practical actions to strengthen water security and resilience in vulnerable outer-island communities.
