Water & Disaster Resilience

ChildFund Kiribati is involved in many initiatives with local and international partners to support i-Kiribati to deal with the many challenges posed by climate change and sea level rise. Some of these initiatives include:

  • Distribution and evaluation of UNICEF WASH kits. Each kit contains a 10-litre collapsible water container, cotton cloth, a child’s potty, soap, a torch, laundry detergent, a whistle, a 14-liter bucket with lid and female sanitary products that households can use in response to drought.

  • Solar Water Distillation Systems. Prior to installation of these systems which provide clean drinking water, CFK undertakes community consultations for these systems which are being installed in communities throughout Kiribati. Thanks to Australian Government for funding and supporting this crucial initiative.

  • Rainwater Harvesting. This rainwater harvesting project focuses on 22 vulnerable community areas in Betio and has been implemented to aid people during this drought period. With community assistance, ChildFund teams installed two 5000 litre tanks, cleaned and installed new gutters, fittings and piping.

  • Drinking water purified by sun

A Solvatten Unit which purifies water using the sun now means that Tiuneta can confidently provide her faily with clean drinking water at little cost.

  • Outer islands to access water

The installation of solar water units at targeted vulnerable villages on the outer islands is kicking off again. This is particularly important during times of drought.

  • WASH Kits evaluation on Maiana

A team from ChildFund Kiribati (CFK) recently spent several days on Maiana, an atoll south of Tarawa, which has been affected by drought and is at risk of sea level rise which can threaten infrastructure, agriculture and water supplies.

  • Drought survey for south Tarawa

ChildFund successfully completed a survey on the drought rapid assessment with random households on South Tarawa and Betio. More than 500 households and nearly 60 church leaders participated,

  • Rainwater harvesting

This rainwater harvesting project mainly focuses on 22 vulnerable community areas in Betio, including church sectors (nwaneaba), community pre-schools, and prison.

  • Solar water distillation units

This initiative for the people of Kiribati is supported by the Australian Government and is implemented by ChildFund Kiribati and Green Living.

  • Providing Clean Water to New Mothers

374 new and expected mothers received a portable solar water purifier, enabling them to access fresh and clean drinking water.

  • Continous work for the CCAIR project on Abaiang!

The ChildFund team's visit to Abaiang's two islets was both successful and productive, marking the beginning of our ongoing efforts for the Community-Led Climate Adaptation for Island Resilience (CCAIR) program on Ribono and Nuotaea islets.
