Rainwater Harvest

The installation of rainwater harvesting was launched with four community mwaneaba which are Santa Maria, Nanomatoa, Tatirerei and Betio Prison. For each three Mwaneaba and the Betio Prison, the ChildFund teams installed two large tanks (5000 litre), cleaning and installed new gutters, fittings, piping, and leakage with community assistance. The team is very thankful for the community’s easy co-operation, as it has certainly contributed to the speedy installation of these rainwater collecting systems.

“We are overjoyed and grateful to receive these types of donations of Solar water distillation and Rainwater Harvesting, as we have been longing and hoping to receive these for ages. We are so thankful now that our community is included to receive these, as it is really helpful to us especially in this drought period,” says one of the recipients from Nanomatoa.

This rainwater harvesting project mainly focuses on 22 vulnerable community areas in Betio, including church sectors (nwaneaba), community pre-schools, and prison.

This strategy has been implemented to aid the Betio People during this drought period. Thanks to the New Zealand Government for funding this initiative and to UNICEF who donated rainwater tanks in support.
