Successful Mission to Kiebu Islet: Improving Water Access, Gardening Skills, and Nutrition

ChildFund Kiribati, together with Green Living (Tobaraoi), the Agriculture and Livestock Division (ALD), and an Outer Island Assistant Infrastructure Technician (OIAIT), completed a successful two-week mission to Kiebu Islet focused on strengthening community resilience through clean drinking water, sustainable gardening, and improved nutrition.

The visit began with a meaningful groundbreaking ceremony attended by the Mayor, Vice Mayor, island council members, community leaders, and the people of Kiebu—setting a strong foundation for the work ahead.

What the Team Accomplished

Throughout the mission, the joint team worked closely with households and community groups to deliver practical, hands-on support:

 Access to Clean Drinking Water

  • Installed 13 solar water distillation units

    • 10 units at community sites

    • 3 units at the Preschool, Primary School, and Clinic

  • Delivered basic maintenance training to ensure long-term sustainability
(Both activities led by the Green Living team)

Gardening and Food Security

  • Conducted hands-on gardening training led by the ALD team

  • Set up 3 new communal nurseries to support local food production

  • Rehabilitated existing water systems to ensure stronger water access for gardening (led by OIAIT)

WASH Awareness

(Led by the ChildFund Kiribati team)

Representatives from every household took part in the sessions, ensuring that skills and knowledge reached all corners of the islet. The team also visited the local preschool and primary school to support children’s learning environments.

A special meeting was held with women executives, strengthening their leadership role in gardening and water-related initiatives—an important step toward sustainable community development.

ChildFund Kiribati extends heartfelt thanks to the people of Kiebu, Green Living (Tobaraoi), MISE, and the ALD team for their warm support, collaboration, and dedication. This mission was made possible through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to a healthier, more resilient Kiebu Islet.
