ChildFund support vocational education for children and adult with disability
Since ChildFund was established it has served its mission to help children and youth thrive, and for children and adults to reach their full potential and become active and productive citizens.
We recently formed a working relationship with Kiribati School and Centre for Children with Special Needs (KSCCSN) to support their educational and training resources for young adult learners aged 18 and over.
Our support has included providing and purchasing vocational resources and equipment such as wheelbarrows, shovels, toolboxes, spades, rakes, timber, flowers, and chicken feeder bags, and much more.
The support aligns well with KSCCN’s objective to enhance vocational skills as a crucial milestone for young adults with a disability. This includes:
Developing a realistic vocational education training curriculum for young adult learners with disabilities and conditions,
Offering lessons in English and Maths,
Training students to use their hands and abilities to create useful things for their families and the wider community,
Creating pathways for further training in a recognized institution in Kiribati,
Improving capacity by sharing skills and hands-on experience, to learn to market and promote their products,
Keeping simple records to monitor and evaluate their work productions and to start an enterprise that will concentrate on products commonly needed by communities in Tarawa.
ChildFund sees this support as crucial and is delighted to be able to provide support to those special children and youth through support from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. We will continue to explore ideas to best support the KSCCSN.
ChildFund is also engaging with Te Toa Matoa, Kiribati’s organization for people with disabilities, and is supporting a youth officer there to empower young adults with knowledge around their rights and opportunities.
